The feast of St Aloysius Gonzaga, patron of St Aloysius Institutions, was celebrated virtually at AIMIT on June 21. In his feast day talk, Dr (Fr) Joseph D’Mello SJ, assistant to the Jesuit Provincial of Karnataka, recalled the life of St Aloysius Gonzaga and said that the saint was very relevant to the times.
Enumerating the unique qualities of St Aloysius Gonzaga, Fr D’Mello said that care, optimism, vision, introspection and depth were the hallmark of the saint. “The first letter each of these five unique qualities adds up to the word COVID. And drawing inspiration from the saint will surely help us to overcome the present crisis of Covid pandemic,” Fr D’Mello added.
He also said that if we want to make a difference in the world we must be persons of depth. “It is important to walk the road less travelled. Gonzaga could do this because he was a man of depth. What matters is not length of life but depth of life. The saint lived just 23 years, but made a difference through his depth,” Fr D’Mello said.
In his message, Director of AIMIT, Dr (Fr) Melwyn Pinto SJ said that the two images of St Aloyisus can help all to course through life. “St Aloysius is portrayed through two images: one him holding a crucifix and the other carrying the plague-stricken patient. The first expresses his faith, the second his service. A combination of faith or spirituality and service is what is expected of every Aloysian,” Fr Pinto said.
Vanitha T from the department of IT in her message said that St Aloysius is an inspiration to all who work in St Aloysius Institutions. “I have been greatly motivated by this saint and I am sure my other colleagues also have been motivated by St Aloysius Gonzaga,” she said.
