A one-day workshop on Advanced Computing for undergraduate students was held on July 26 at AIMIT, St Aloysius College (Deemed to be University), Mangalore. A total of 94 undergraduate students (BCA and BSc Computer Science as one of the allied subject) from Dr P. Dayananda Pai, P. Satisha Pai Government First Grade College, Mangalore, attended the workshop.

Dr (Fr) Melwyn Pinto SJ inaugurated the workshop. In his inaugural address, Fr Pinto urged the participants to understand the impact of IT in recent times, and the huge job opportunities that are available. He also stressed the role of being competent to be successful. Dr Hemalatha, Dean (Academics, IT) elaborated on the various courses available at AIMIT, and stressed the need of soft skill for being successful.

The workshop consisted of three sessions. Dr Santhosh. B, HOD of MCA department was the resource person for the first session on Cloud Computing. He highlighted the impact of cloud computing in today’s IT world. The second session on Analytics was taken by Dr Rakesh Kumar, HOD of MSc Big Data Analytics department. He elaborated the role of Analytics in our day to day life, and listed out the technical foundation needed to pursue a career in Analytics.

The afternoon session was a hands-on session led by the student team comprising of Rohan, Arshan, Razeen, Safwan, Vishnu from the PG Department of Software Technology. They took a session on ‘Developing a website using WordPress’. This was followed by a hands-on session on WordPress. A quiz was conducted by Roopesh and Deeksha, students from MSc Software Technology department. The concluding session was taken by Dr S. Ruban, HOD, PG Dept of Software Technology. Dr S. Ruban described the importance of pursuing higher education and changing the mindset to create right attitude to prosper in education. He also narrated various opportunities available before the undergraduate computer science students and also answered questions about the differences between MCA and MSc (ST) course, jobs and higher education in general.

The workshop was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mrs Suparna, Asst Professor, Dept. of Computer Science, Dr P. Dayananda Pai-P. Satisha Pai Government First Grade College, Mangalore. This workshop was organised by Srinivas. B. L. along with student volunteers from MSc Software Technology.
